Joe has happily lived in Melbourne all of his life. He completed a Master of Music (Performance) Degree at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2002. Joe studied with Eric Klay, Ian Perry and Fabian Russell, and received lessons from Charles Vernon, Ed Kleinhammer, Arnold Jacobs and Michael Mulcahy as well as performing in masterclasses with renowned trombone virtuoso Christian Lindberg. Joe has performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria and various theatre orchestras. He has also played in bands that have backed Jerry Lewis, Ray Charles, Shirley Bassey and Alice Cooper. Joe holds a Diploma in Education and is currently Head of Low Brass at Caulfield Grammar School, where he enjoys running the beginning concert band and the senior stage band. He was a trombone tutor at Border Music Camp from 1990 to 1995, conducted Pringle in 1997 and 1999, and returned to conduct Hardie in 2011. Joe loves playing his bass trombone every day, the Hawthorn Football Club and walking around in dead peoples' clothes (also known as op shopping).
